Daily Habits That Are Surprisingly Harmful To Your Health (part 2)

This is a continuation of our previous post on Daily Habits That Are Surprisingly Harmful To Your Health. See this post for the beginning.

Taking nutritional supplements

Nutritional Supplements

These supplements are supposed to be taken on prescription. Supplements are not ordinary pills you can take in at anytime.

Most times, they are prescribed when your doctor notices a deficiency in the level of a particular vitamin or mineral in your body. In order to restore the vitamin or mineral levels to normal, some supplements are prescribed.

It is very important to know the dosage of what you’re taking so as to avoid overdose.

These things seem harmless but they’re not. When you continuously take overdose of these supplements, there is going to be oversecretion of such minerals or vitamins in the blood, leading to certain health conditions. For example:

  • Too much calcium can weaken the bones (a complete opposite of what we take it for), create kidney stones and alter how the brain and heart works
  • Too much of vitamin c causes diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, heart burn, bloating, and stomach cramps.
  • Too much vitamin D causes increase in blood calcium level, and we have seen the effect of calcium overdose in the body
  • Too much omega 3 can cause low blood pressure, thinning of blood, excess bleeding if an injury were to occur or increased risk of bruising.
  • Folic acid toxicity can cause seizures, stomach upset, nausea, confusion, irritability, irritability, behavior changes, skin reactions, diarrhea, and other side effects.

Now you can see that these supplements can be harmful when taken over-dose.

Smoking

Woman smoking

It’s no surprise that this is in our list of bad habits that are harmful to women.

Smoking is harmful to both Men and women, but it’s effect is more grave in women.

Women who smoke are more likely to:

  • Have more painful and irregular periods,
  • Have low estrogen levels (which can lead to mood swings, fatigue, and vaginal dryness).
  • Go through menopause at a younger age, and have worse symptoms.
  • Have trouble getting pregnant.
  • Have increased chance of ectopic pregnancy.

Also, pregnant women who smoke put their fetus to grave danger. The baby is likely to:

  • Have under-developed brain
  • Be born with cleft lips or cleft upper mouth.
  • Have a very low weight at birth.
  • Have sudden infant death syndrome
  • Develop heart (and other organs) failures.

Smoking does no good for your body.

Eating junk food too often

Junk Food

Junk food has inevitably made its way into our lives. Chiefly due to lack of time to prepare healthy foods, and laziness too.

The thing with Junk food is that most of them contain substances that are harmful to the health.

Substances like: preservatives, Trans fats, Bad cholesterol, ridiculously high calories and so on.

All these substances have been linked, in one way or the other, to various health conditions like: Increase in stress level, high blood pressure, hypertension, high bad cholesterol, blood sugar (diabetes or high blood glucose),  and malfunctioning of thyroid.

These harmful substances have also been associated with psychological problems like: Increase in anger, early ageing, reduced muscle strength, low energy levels, low immunity to diseases, mental irritation, lack of mind coordination, forgetfulness, depression, eye sight problems and sleeping disorder.

Wearing heels

High heel shoes

Excellent for making a fashion statement; high heels are the perfect finish for your classy dresses because they make you look classier, more elegant, and they increase your height too.

You may wonder what this is doing in this list. Well, wearing heels are not all that unhealthy, the problem is in wearing them regularly.

High heels can cause pain in your lower back and legs, it can also lead to sprain ankle (if you trip, sorry).

The shoe tends to squeeze your foot in order to fit, this isn’t healthy as it constrict blood vessels.

Staying in an unhealthy relationship

Sad woman with man

When we talk of relationships, we don’t just narrow it down to a husband-wife or boyfriend-girlfriend thing.

A relationship, according to the Oxford dictionary, is a connection between two or more people, or the way in which two or more people are connected.

From this definition, we can look at: parent-child relationship, boss-employee relationship, teacher-student relationship and so on.

Speaking of unhealthy relationships, they affect us in so many ways like decrease in self-esteem, lowering of self-worth, lack of confidence, depression, fear and uncertainty, psychological disorders and so on.

Any relationship that doesn’t make you happy or feel good about yourself isn’t worth keeping. Our primary aim of going into relationships (boy-girl or man-woman relationships) is to be a part of something good, something cherishable, to love and be loved.

If these expectations are not met, we often get disappointed. If you persist in such relationships, you might end up with some serious mental issues.

For this reason, it is crucial that you identify toxic relationships and leave if they can’t be fixed. Your happiness and health is all that matters.

A dead woman can’t love, remember that.

In conclusion, some of these habits are not unhealthy, it’s just an “over-do” that constitutes harm. For a recap, here are the habits we talked about in this post:

  • Taking nutritional supplements
  • Smoking
  • Eating junk food too often
  • Wearing heels
  • Staying in an unhealthy relationship
